Should President Joe Biden bow to intensifying pressure to drop his re-election bid,听Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Rep. Haley Stevens both said Thursday they would back promoting Vice President Kamala Harris to the top of the ticket.
鈥淚 support Joe Biden and I support Kamala Harris, and if for some reason it was not Joe Biden, we鈥檙e going to embrace our vice president,鈥 Stabenow said at a Biden-Harris campaign appearance in Detroit.
鈥淎bsolutely,鈥 Stevens, who represents Oakland County, said in agreement.
Neither woman has urged Biden to step aside since a disastrous debate in June against former President Donald Trump raised questions about the 81-year-old鈥檚 mental acuity, but have.
There are reports that and other high-profile Democrats have privately urged the president to quit the race amid increasingly dire polling in swing states including Michigan. Rep. Hillary Scholten of Grand Rapids is the only elected Democratic member of Congress from Michigan to call for Biden to withdraw thus far, and Politico reports the for that statement.
Biden, isolating in Delaware after coming down with COVID-19, is rumored to have asked about whether Harris can win.
The aim of the Biden-Harris event was for Stabenow, Stevens, and Rep. Shri Thanedar to attack Trump鈥檚 vice presidential nominee, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance. They attacked his positions on abortion rights, unions, and the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and touted economic gains in the state under Biden.
Thanedar did not join in vocally supporting Harris as the presidential nominee, instead reiterating his belief that Biden would remain in the race and win Michigan.
鈥淏iden remains hugely popular and there is a huge support for him,鈥 said Thanedar, who represents Detroit. 鈥淗e is being elected in a democratic process by the Democratic Party, and I think he鈥檚 our best hope to win back to the White House.鈥
If Biden did quit the ticket, Democrats would face an unprecedented rush to replace him at the party convention in Chicago next month. Many fear that process would be a divisive free-for-all because Biden鈥檚 delegates would become unbound to any candidate.
Stabenow, however, believes the heir apparent is clear: Harris.
鈥淚 mean, we have a Biden-Harris administration, and with all the things that they have accomplished, she has certainly earned the spot,鈥 Stabenow told 黑料网 Detroit. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why we have a vice president.鈥
