Mister Dips, a retro burger and ice cream joint by Chef Andrew Carmellini of New York-based NoHo Hospitality Group, opened its new Detroit location today. Located in Parker’s Alley adjacent to the Shinola Hotel, the spot will serve up unique twists on classic All-American eats in a casual, inviting atmosphere.

Guests can indulge in the eatery’s signature griddle burgers, which come with a variety of add-ons including aged cheddar, double-smoked bacon, and spicy red slaw. A vegetarian version, which features an Impossible-brand meatless patty, Alpine Swiss cheese, and sprouted alfalfa, is also available.

Along with its Cripsy Waffles (waffle fries that can be served plain or “Dirty Dipped” in gooey queso and scallions), the spot also offers a variety of sweet, creamy treats, including Dairy Dips — specialty soft-serve ice cream cones — and Dipsy Doozies, thick shakes made from indulgent ingredients like organic churned buttermilk and malted brownie batter. The Detroit location will see the addition of the Boozy Doozy, a liquor-spiked milkshake. Beer and wine is also available as well as themed cones and pop-up specials that incorporate local flavors and ingredients.

“We are working with farms in Michigan such as Guernsey Farms Dairy to source buttermilk and cream for some of our creative ice creams and shakes,” says Luke Ostrom, managing partner at NoHo Hospitality Group. “We plan to source local produce to be used as well.”

Mister Dips’ original location, which served snacks out of a vintage 1974 Airstream trailer, opened in Brooklyn’s Vale Park in 2016. The concept was a hit, spawning a brick-and-mortar location in Manhattan’s Seaport District earlier this year. The Detroit incarnation of Mister Dips joins Penny Red’s, San Morello, The Evening Bar, and The Brakeman as part of NoHo’s ever-expanding restaurant footprint in the city. While the opening was originally slated for spring of 2020, pandemic-related delays ultimately pushed the opening back by over a year.

“This city has become a real second home for us,” Ostrom says. “The Detroit community knows what it likes, and there’s no better time to open a unique, ‘come-as-you-are’ burger and ice cream spot for all ages…particularly after such a difficult year.”

Mister Dips, located at 19 E. Grand River Ave., is open from noon until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday; and noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
