Co-owners Emmele Herrold and Beth Hussey knew when they opened their Birmingham-based restaurant Hazel鈥檚 in 2018 that the spacious, airy location had the potential to be a favorite for regulars as well as a destination for memorable events.
In a vibrant Metro Detroit restaurant scene, the space to accommodate large groups or host small events has also set Hazel鈥檚 apart.
鈥淲e have lots of options, for groups big and small,鈥 said Herrold. 鈥淵ou can have a space customized for 20 people or an even larger party.鈥
Herrold said Hazel鈥檚 can accommodate anything from a plated or family-style seated dinner to a chic cocktail hour or an extravagant breakfast, lunch or dinner buffet. Host a working lunch.
Bring the friends together for a soup-and-salad lunch. Plan a holiday dinner party. Hazel鈥檚 Pastry Chef Olivia Marchenia can even create a custom party cake. Hazel鈥檚 own fresh seafood, much-loved burgers and fried chicken prove to be among the most popular options.
Hussey said they often get requests for the Dinner to Remember, which includes a full dining experience with in-season crustaceans like lobster or crab legs accompanied by shrimp, clams or mussels, sausage, boiled potatoes, corn on the cob, bread and butter alongside Hazel鈥檚 perfectly fried chicken and an optional bib. It鈥檚 a crowd-pleaser with something for everyone.
鈥淥ur Dinner to Remember is something you won鈥檛 find anywhere else,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a full seafood experience meant to be shared.鈥
By seasonally updating the menu to reflect seafood favorites from regions like the Florida Panhandle, Pacific or Atlantic Coast and Low Country regions, Hazel鈥檚 dining experience combines the best dishes from the across the country, right in Metro Detroit. And the flexibility of dining spaces 鈥 from private rooms to communal tables, high and low-top dining and convivial bar seats 鈥 adds a personal touch to any visit.
Even the littlest guests are treated to something great. From kid-friendly menu options to drinks like All the Fishes in the Sea 鈥 a blue sparkling soda concoction that comes complete with gummy candy fish 鈥 there鈥檚 plenty to love at Hazel鈥檚.
Herrold, who coaches swimming in the community in her free time, said kids often tell her Hazel鈥檚 is their favorite restaurant. It鈥檚 has become a go-to option for families, parties and date-night alike.
Going above and beyond expectations is just part of their hospitality philosophy, according to Hussey and Herrold. It鈥檚 one reason Hazel鈥檚 has become a destination in the community.
