After winning for “Best Summer Travel Destination” back in April, Mackinac Island is once again in the running to be named a top travel spot —this time in the publication’s “” category.
Each year, USA today pits destinations around the country against one another to find out who their readers think is the best in categories like food, sports, beer city, travel destinations, town squares, and much more. Experts in each field pick the top 20 nominees in each category and then readers vote for the nominees they think are the best.
In addition to the island’s rich heritage, Victorian architecture, historic spaces, and old-school charm, its annual transformation from lush green into red, orange, and yellow hues —which make for stunning fall foliage tours — as well as reduced crowds, budget-friendly shopping, and seasonal events, are among the reasons that made Mackinac Island a contender in this category.
“Mackinac Island has captured the hearts of many and when the fall season arrives, it ushers in slower mornings, smaller crowds, and incredible fall foliage which is why it’s affectionately known as ‘perfect season’ around the island,” says Tim Hygh, Executive Director of the .
“The island community felt immense pride in being named the ‘Best Summer Travel Destination’ this year and we’re grateful the travel experts and readers at USA Today 10Best are recognizing the island once again. It would be an honor to carry the top title for fall in 2023.”
Other finalists for best fall travel destination include Allegany County, Maryland; Asheville, North Carolina; Ashland, Oregon; Bayfield, Wisconsin; Bloomington, Indiana, and Branson, Missouri.
Voting for USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice “Best Place to Visit for Fall” category is now open and will remain open until noon on Monday, Sept. 4, 2023. Winners will be announced on Friday, Sept. 15, 2023.
