Oarsmen’s Ball

February 1, 2025 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$95

Since 1839, the Detroit Boat Club Crew has served as the home for rowing in Detroit. This year, we celebrate the return of the historic Oarsmen鈥檚 Ball, a fundraiser to support Friends of Detroit Rowing (FODR)鈥檚 campaign to build a new shellhouse that will help increase public access to the Detroit River and the sport of rowing.

Join us at the Dossin Museum for a black-tie optional shin-dig where you can explore the exhibits, stroll the halls, sample hors d鈥檕euvres, listen to jazz music, bid on a silent auction, enjoy the cash bar, or meet an old Olympian or two.

Help make a significant impact on our community and the future of rowing. Funds raised will help ensure the success of FODR鈥檚 Share an Oar, Share the Shore Campaign. Together, we can inspire a new generation of rowers and ensure everyone can experience the beauty of the Detroit River.

DBCC currently offers the following programs:1. Junior Racing Program: Participants learn about general wellness, nutrition, physical fitness, equipment maintenance, and high-level teamwork. Water access provides opportunity to learn about weather patterns, ecology of Belle Isle and the Detroit River, and water safety practices. Athletes are given the opportunity to take leadership roles like team captains, safety captains, and coxswains (leader/coach in boat). Junior rowers from both the city and surrounding Metro Detroit area have the rare opportunity to train together and socialize in an outdoor setting, often after a school day spent indoors.2. Youth Community Programs: including 鈥淟earn to Row鈥 summer camps for ages 12 and up & Stem 2 Stern programs that teach middle school students rowing along with a component of STEM education that provides physical fitness, teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. In addition, learn to row indoor programs are offered in conjunction with community partners such as Embrace Sportz, Downtown Boxing Gym, and the Detroit Public School District.3. Adult Rowing Programs: We accommodate athletes from 23-82 years of age with a range of training options to fit their goals and abilities. FODR provides an outdoor wellness community for adults, combining the youthful energy of our athletes in their 20s with the hard-won experience of our master rowers.4. Military Outreach: We offer crew instruction at the John D. Dingell Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center fitness center that accommodates a wide range of abilities and needs. Our on-water programs provide a place of belonging for veterans and military family members. We seek out opportunities to connect with the local military and veteran community, such as having set up an active exhibit at the recent Selfridge Air National Guard Base Air Show.5. Collegiate Programs: Serves rowers ages 18-23. FODR houses and helps sponsor the Wayne State Crew Team. In addition, collegiate rowers home for the summer in Detroit train at a high level at DBCC.
